What's in a Name? Building Life on God's Values

"You shall not take the name of the LORD you God in vein, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain." Exodus 20:7 ESV

One's Name Represent Three Things: 

1. It represents reputation. 
2. It represents character. 
3. It represents authority. 

 

A) Ways God's Name is misused… 

1. Using God's name to insult. 
2. Using God's name to indulge. 
3. Using God's name to intimidate. 
4. Using God's name to impress.
5. Using God's name impulsively.

B) How to use God's name correctly… 

1. Reference God's name continually. 
2. Represent God's name clearly. 
3. Rely on God's name completely. 

 

Life Application 

The bad news: Matthew 12:36-37

The good news: You can skip the Judgement.

You Can't Beat the Real Thing - Building Life on God's Values, Part 2

A. Don't idolize anything!

Idolize = to value something more than God

Deut. 4:15-16, John 4:24, Isa. 40:25

We've used the "addiction" ……… because we don't have any control over addition

When someone controls you, psychologists call that dependency. 

We now say, "It's much easier to change my image of God than it is to change me." 

1) Idols will disappoint us. 

2) Idols will dominate us. 

3) Idols will deform us. 

 

B. Worship God only! 

"Worship" ___ God with my highest love and devotion. Romans 1:25

Motive that drive idols worship: 

• An attempt to limit God's location.

• An attempt to reduce God's power.

• An attempt to control God's ___.

We say, "I want enough for You to bless me Lord, just don't boss me."

"God, if you let me do this, then I'll do that." 

Benefits of worshiping God only… 

1) Worshiping God will delight me ___

Image worship humanizes God and deifies man. 

2) Worshiping God will deliver me ___

3) Worshiping God will develop me ___ 

Forgiving sins seems to create a problem for the righteousness of God. It makes him look like a judge who will let criminals go free and get by with anything they want. 

The mercy of God puts the justice of God in jeopardy. Calvary was God glorifying God. Now, sin no longer has power over our lives.

2) How do I put God first? 

Give God priority in five areas. 

• Put God first in my finances. …

• Put God first in my relationships… 

• Put God first in my schedule… 

• Put God first in my troubles… 

 

LIFE APPLICATION 

Joshua's commitment: Joshua 24:15 "…but as for me and my household, we will serve the LORD." 

Claiming What Is Yours - Joshua 14:9

When I Confess Him as LORD:

"Living Light: Conquering Disappointment, Depression and Doubt" - John 12:46

"I have come into the world as light, so that whoever believes in me may not remain in darkness." -  John 12:46 ESV

 

A) Everyone has dark days… 

1) Dark days of disappointment. Job 30:26

2) Dark days of distress. Ps. 22:1

3) Dark days of doubt.  John 12:35 

4) Dark days of depression. Lam 3:19, Ps. 88:18 

 

What is the antidote? - 2 Sam. 22:29 

B. How does Christ dispel my darkness? 

1) He will encourage me when I am disappointed.  Ps. 34:18, Jer. 29:11 

2) He will strengthen me when I am distressed. Phil. 4:13, Ps. 23:4 

3) He will guide me when I am doubtful.  John 8:12, Ps. 119:105 

4) He will change me when I am depressed.  Eph. 5:13-14, Eph 5:9 

LIFE APPLICATION  - 1 John 2:8 

Do you want to leave the dark days? Then you must choose to start living in the light. 

Another Jesus - Psalm 27:4

"One thing I have desired of the LORD, That will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD All the days of my life, To behold the beauty of the LORD, And to inquire in His temple." - Psalm 27:4 

 

Foundational Truths from God's Word

1) Psalm 27:8 

What does it mean to seek the face of God? 

To require His presence and His favor. 

2) 2 Cor. 11:2-4 

Paul is not just talking about deceived teachers who proclaim another Jesus. Paul is also referring to concepts that claim Christ-likeness. 

3) 2 Cor. 3:16-18 

We are not transformed by what we do but by who we behold. 

4) Psalm 135:15-18

The most basic truth in all theology is a person becomes like their god.

Your behavior will fit your revelation.

We have lost the ability to discern good.
